new topic post [may 2011]

New Topic for this month is 'Your Weirdest Dream'! Next changeover will be May 31-June 1 ;)

Okay, I know, I've been terrible too.

1. Sushi Toriyaki TV Show Art
-Gio
(For the uninitiated, Sushi Toriyaki is the film we made for the film race over last weekend and involves a ridiculous fictional anime show/character of the same name. If you're willing to wait a day to view this amazing creation, Brian will probably be posting it somewhere tomorrow night after it is screened.)

2. What really killed the dinosaurs?
-Tris

3. Your weirdest dream
-Manny

I'm giving you guys till Sunday at midnight, since this was kind of a weird week and people have been busy anyway. VOTE PLZ ♥

A good portion of us have been hard at work over the past two days because of the 24 Hour Film Race (Mitternacht Studios - look out for us!), so the date for changeover has been pushed back a bit. Sorry for not making an announcement earlier!

Suggestions are open NOW, and will close tomorrow 2nd May at 3PM, after which voting will begin :D Shoot!

Mar 30, 2011

new topic post [30 mar - 1 april 2011]

All right! topic for April will be Monsters' Ball :) Next changeover will be April 30-May 1.

Monsters' Ball (as in fancy party, just fyi. but if you want to play on other meanings of 'ball', be my guest.)
-Shelley

Topics are in, now vote away ♥ Voting will end at midnight tomorrow (Friday, April 1st-2nd).

2. Live action into animation crossover. This means crossing over characters from a live action film or series and place them in a cartoon world. For example having Kickass characters crossover with Powerpuff girls, this means adapting the powerpuff style to kickass characters. And then having them interact with the powerpuff girl world in some way, like fighting mojo jojo alongside the actual powerpuff girls. I now realized this was a bad example because Kickass is based on a comic but you get the idea. -Brian

3. Hyper-realistic cartoon or video game characters -Brian

----

Hi folkses! Figured there was no harm in kicking this off like eight or nine hours early, so here we go! Post suggestions for a new topic in comments. Because the previous changeover was a three-way and extra long, I'm waiving the if-your-topic-got-picked-you-have-to-skip-a-turn rule this time - in other words, Ivey, Laura, and Brian will all still be able to make suggestions this time around.

Call for suggestions will close and voting will start at midnight, 1st April 2011 (i.e. Thursday night). :)

Jan 31, 2011

new topic post [31 jan - 1 feb 2011]

Since most people including myself were having trouble picking a favourite, I decided let's make this time multiple-choice! :D You can pick and choose from any of the three topics, and even combine two or more if you're feeling up to it. Any number of drawings is cool, as per usual. If this a success I'll consider doing this more often.

Changeover date will be March 31 - April 1, since February is a short month and this is a big deal. I expect to see some weird and wonderful insanity result, so GO FORTH AND GO TO TOWN, FOLKS. ♥

1. 80s-90s cartoon fanart - Laura

2. "if you were trapped in a video game, what powers/weapons/appearance would you be stuck with at the first level or stage. no godmodding. you start at level one. also what situation would you end up being in at the first stage (they make the first encounter with a boss real freaky sometimes)
can be any video game or something u made up. doesn't have to be generic too. it can be something like pokemon"
- Ivey

3. "Create something based off of a song.

Any song, it can be an emotional response or can be a literal representation of the song's lyrics or title. Whatever the song brings out of you.

Just make sure you post the song title and artist in your blog post and also a link to the song would be really cool. "
- Brian

Annnd suggestions closed. We've got a nice three entries in, now vote away!

Eh, why not start a couple hours early? :D Suggest away, friends! Suggestions will close and voting start next midnight (1 Feb).

Even visitors to the blog can feel free to suggest topics, but only members can vote.

new topic post! [3rd-4thJan2011]

EDIT2 [4thJan2011] :

All right, seems like the tribe has spoken rather unanimously. xD

The topic for these two weeks will be "Everything I Touch Turns To Gold", and the next changeover will be on Jan 16th :) Thanks, all!

---

We've got a few suggestions in, and it's now voting time! Post in the comments which idea you'd most like to draw for the next two weeks, 1, 2, or 3, and I'll tally them up in approximately 24 hours (i.e. 5 Jan 2011, 3 AM EST).

1. "I've got the key!" - Gio

2. Draw our pets as whacked-out cartoon animals - Natasha

3. "Everything I touch turns to gold" -Hana
(we've got a shortage of active participants right now, so I'm putting this up with the rest, but in future: if you picked a topic the previous week you've got to skip a turn!)

Of course, if you suggested something, you can't vote for yourself, but you can opt to support someone else's idea. If there's a tie, I'll break it (not going to cast my vote until the last). By the same token, if nobody else votes, I'll pick which one (probably at random, because I love all these ideas). :P

If your idea doesn't get picked this week you can still pitch it next changeover. The more the merrier!

---

Okay guys, let's try out this new system! Anyone that has an idea for stuff we can draw for the next two weeks, post them in the comments :) Suggestions will close and voting will start in approximately 24 hours!

New Topic!

Ok, so I guess its my turn to choose the topic before the system changes and as always it should be something fun, so....

East Asian Monsters... it could be something entirely crazy and I know how we all like that. There are some pretty strange Japanese monsters (Yokai) but it needn't be limited to just Japan. It makes it a little more challenging to make it area specific but you know you will find something there that piques your interest.

And of course there are no limits to posting on an older topic, so if you who want to post an introduction, you still can.

first post!

Hi guys, and welcome to Tonight We Draw! (don't ask why that name... it appeared to me and after not very much deliberation I decided it was perfect. :B) We're a group of friends who enjoy drawing and draw for a living, and this blog is set up to act as a roughly bimonthly drawing exercise. Every two weeksmonth we'll pick a new topic, and post whatever sketches or drawings we come up with based on that.

Not going to bog this down with too many actual rules, but just to clarify:

  • any number of entries per person per subject is cool. this is supposed to be a fun thing, so if you've completed one drawing and have more ideas, go for it! revisiting older topics, posting works-in-progress and then updating later is also okay.

  • any form of media - illustration, animation, rough sketches, models, digital, traditional - goes, as long as it involves drawing/sculpting/building in some way. (too bad - I know some of you were looking forward to submitting entries in the form of interpretive dance)

  • we take turns to pick a topic/theme/challenge alphabetically by first name, just to have some kind of order. new system!

  • I have no issues with violence and nudity but I'd advise posting some kind of warning and linking offblog if it's really explicit, just because it's the internet, and employers and future-employers can find these things. Plus I think it'd be cool if this could act as a kind of pseudo group portfolio effort. But you be the judge of what you think is okay/not okay for public consumption.

  • not a big deal, but would appreciate it if you guys could label your posts with the topic in question just to keep stuff organized! you can title posts/drawings whatever you want.

Okay, now we've got that out of the way... as founder of this blog, I'm picking the first topic: Introductions. Come up with a picture that acts as a self-portrait as well as representative of what you find aesthetically pleasing or inspiring. I know, so art school. :B

(Tris, two mondays from now (13th Dec), it's your turn to pick a topic/challenge. :) and if you guys have anything to add/suggest/correct me on, feel free to comment.)
