Future of this blog

(June 16th 2011) EDIT/UPDATE: OKAY so I am putting the blog as on update-hiatus. There won't be more topics for a tentative period of about four months. During this period anybody can still submit stuff for any past topics, of course, and we welcome rough sketches and works in progress too (*cough* MANNY).

In about four months or so I'll send out emails and see if we all are ready to start up again or extend the hiatus some more.

Tiana also brought up the idea of an 'inspiration bank', somewhere we can post ideas if and when we think of them, and anybody would be able to go there if they needed to pick something to draw. Not sure if I should make that a separate thing or somehow incorporate it into TWD (though I can't really think of how) - let me know if anyone has any input!

Have a fun and productive summer, mofos. ♥

Dear TWDers,

I'm not really sure what to do here. I know we've all been busy and had other things to concern ourselves with lately -- myself included -- and let me just make it clear that I don't fault anybody for that. But when it gets to the point where fewer and fewer people are contributing or even suggesting/voting on topics, I have to consider possibly putting this blog on hiatus (I don't really welcome the idea of closing it completely, and I doubt you guys do either).

I resisted this idea at first, since in my opinion I don't really think there is going to be a time when all of us are completely free given the stage of our lives we're all currently in, and thus there would really be no 'right' time to resurrect the blog. But I think the fact that the topics will keep changing every month discourages some people that feel they're too far behind. Even though I have stated before that there is NO deadline for any entries and that the topic changes are merely to keep a stream of fresh ideas (since I think waiting around for everyone to contribute before changing topics would be a really bad idea), I understand that some might still feel pressured by the monthly changeovers regardless.

TL;DR: At this point I'm just wondering if it might be best if we DID hold off on the topic changes for at least some months. It would give everyone some catch-up time, at least.

Thoughts/opinions?

new topic post [31 jan - 1 feb 2011]

Since most people including myself were having trouble picking a favourite, I decided let's make this time multiple-choice! :D You can pick and choose from any of the three topics, and even combine two or more if you're feeling up to it. Any number of drawings is cool, as per usual. If this a success I'll consider doing this more often.

Changeover date will be March 31 - April 1, since February is a short month and this is a big deal. I expect to see some weird and wonderful insanity result, so GO FORTH AND GO TO TOWN, FOLKS. ♥

1. 80s-90s cartoon fanart - Laura

2. "if you were trapped in a video game, what powers/weapons/appearance would you be stuck with at the first level or stage. no godmodding. you start at level one. also what situation would you end up being in at the first stage (they make the first encounter with a boss real freaky sometimes)
can be any video game or something u made up. doesn't have to be generic too. it can be something like pokemon"
- Ivey

3. "Create something based off of a song.

Any song, it can be an emotional response or can be a literal representation of the song's lyrics or title. Whatever the song brings out of you.

Just make sure you post the song title and artist in your blog post and also a link to the song would be really cool. "

Annnd suggestions closed. We've got a nice three entries in, now vote away!

Eh, why not start a couple hours early? :D Suggest away, friends! Suggestions will close and voting start next midnight (1 Feb).

Even visitors to the blog can feel free to suggest topics, but only members can vote.

thought

UPDATE: Yep, I think we're going to go ahead with this. Changeover on Jan 31-Feb 1 :)

---

firstly, sorry to drop so many administrative posts on y'all lately.

since none of us seem to be done with our golden touch pictures (myself included of course, I'm definitely not having mine up by monday), shall we postpone the changeover date to the end of the month? I mean yeah technically you can post the pictures up late if you want to but it just seems like defeating the purpose to switch topics when nobody's done with the previous one.

also, think we should make the changeover dates monthly instead of every two weeks? give us more time, and the date will be easier to remember. :)

adminpost: new subject-choice system

hey guys,

I ran this past some of you and you all seemed to think it was a good idea, so I figured I'd make a proper post about it. after Tris takes his turn this week to pick a subject, I'd like to try out a new way to choose what we draw. I think taking turns would have worked fine when there were just a handful of us but now that there's quite a number and counting, I don't think it's that practical as some people would have to wait months to choose. What I propose is as follows:

1. every two weeks month there will be one day where anyone can post an idea for a drawing topic. I'll create an entry specifically for this purpose, and people can post in the comments what they'd like to try. suggestions would only be open for 24 hours.

2. the day after that we all vote as to which topic we'd most like to try out. voting would be open for 24 hours after which the topic with the highest rating would be the one we decide on for the next two weeks.

my main concern was that this system would be overly complicated, but I think I've streamlined it as much as possible and I definitely won't mind overseeing the process to make sure it runs smoothly. topic suggestions and voting would of course only be open to TWD members, and I was also thinking that if someone's idea gets chosen, the next week that person would have to sit out suggesting ideas, just to try and give everyone a chance.

feel free to comment if you have any suggestions/concerns/questions; if nobody has any objections we'll be trying this out in two weeks (midnight, 27th Dec 2010). I'll keep the Current Theme box on the side updated with the requisite info as we go along. :)

first post!

Hi guys, and welcome to Tonight We Draw! (don't ask why that name... it appeared to me and after not very much deliberation I decided it was perfect. :B) We're a group of friends who enjoy drawing and draw for a living, and this blog is set up to act as a roughly bimonthly drawing exercise. Every two weeksmonth we'll pick a new topic, and post whatever sketches or drawings we come up with based on that.

Not going to bog this down with too many actual rules, but just to clarify:

  • any number of entries per person per subject is cool. this is supposed to be a fun thing, so if you've completed one drawing and have more ideas, go for it! revisiting older topics, posting works-in-progress and then updating later is also okay.

  • any form of media - illustration, animation, rough sketches, models, digital, traditional - goes, as long as it involves drawing/sculpting/building in some way. (too bad - I know some of you were looking forward to submitting entries in the form of interpretive dance)

  • we take turns to pick a topic/theme/challenge alphabetically by first name, just to have some kind of order. new system!

  • I have no issues with violence and nudity but I'd advise posting some kind of warning and linking offblog if it's really explicit, just because it's the internet, and employers and future-employers can find these things. Plus I think it'd be cool if this could act as a kind of pseudo group portfolio effort. But you be the judge of what you think is okay/not okay for public consumption.

  • not a big deal, but would appreciate it if you guys could label your posts with the topic in question just to keep stuff organized! you can title posts/drawings whatever you want.

Okay, now we've got that out of the way... as founder of this blog, I'm picking the first topic: Introductions. Come up with a picture that acts as a self-portrait as well as representative of what you find aesthetically pleasing or inspiring. I know, so art school. :B

(Tris, two mondays from now (13th Dec), it's your turn to pick a topic/challenge. :) and if you guys have anything to add/suggest/correct me on, feel free to comment.)
